Quality Engineer/QA Technologist

Main Purposes of the Job

To ensure that Products & Suppliers within the assigned product category (electrical) comply with the Groups Quality, Safety and Environmental requirements and UK/European legislation and that product information and communication is technically correct and complies with legal requirements.

Key Performance Areas

1. Responsible for product evaluation and approval within assigned category, including risk assessment and benchmarking processes, to ensure that only compliant products (Safe, Legal, Reliable and Fit-for-Purpose) enter the business.
2. To ensure all non-compliance issues are effectively dealt with and appropriate remedial action taken through direct contact with appropriate Supplier contact prior to product approval. Ensure that the necessary improvements are identified and followed through with the timely and accurate distribution of associated reports.
3. Ensure accuracy of product certification and specification data provided by Suppliers and maintain technical files to the required level of detail and content for Own Brand and Direct Import products as part of the evaluation and approval process..
4. Carry out supplier evaluation and approvals as appropriate, including associated manufacturing sites, and ensure all non-compliance issues are effectively dealt with and appropriate remedial action taken. Ensure that the necessary improvements are identified and followed through with the timely and accurate distribution of associated reports.
5. Investigate and report on technical queries and quality concerns in relation to product returns, critical product failures and customer complaints identifying remedial actions, product changes and associated cost implications.
6. To assess and review product related information and communication to ensure that it is technically correct and complies with legal requirements.
7. Support the Trading Teams, on the selection of safe, legal and suitable products for purchase.
8. Establish relationships with the technical/Quality contacts at Suppliers and specialist service providers such as Test Houses, Trade Associations etc. associated to assigned product category.
9. Ensure the QA Manager is informed immediately where it is identified that a Supplier has failed to adhere to agreed requirements/specification resulting in an unacceptable level of risk to group brands or exposure to the overall business.


Creativity and Problem Solving

* Plan product evaluations, samples and technical files to meet shipment/delivery deadlines.
* Interpretation of product safety & technical standards, legislation and environmental impact to specific products.
* Recommendations for rejection or technical/specification improvement based on technical knowledge and expertise.
* Maintaining activities within the assigned category and scope of the quality management system to ensure that Company and Group QA objectives and targets are met.
* To integrate within the structure and have excellent communicate skills. In particular, a good working relationship with the Trading Teams.
* To identify and propose revolutionary enhancements to Group QA operating and management systems and implementation of such improvements to ensure the smooth transition of agreed changes.
* Varied complexities due to technical nature of product, compliance requirements and route to market. Getting it wrong can have a major impact on product safety, reliability and legal compliance.

Person Specification / Requirements

• Professional/Technical Qualification in an appropriate field (Degree equivalent) i.e. Chartered Engineer. Diploma Quality Management.

• In-depth knowledge of QA Practices and Methodology.

• In-depth detailed knowledge of British & European product safety & technical standards and associated compliance certification.

• Detailed knowledge and experience of CE Directives.

• Detailed knowledge and experience of WEEE Directives.

• Detailed knowledge of product legislation and Environmental impact.

• Detailed practical experience of factory manufacturing processes and best practice.

• Resilience in following through business critical issues.

• Persuasive approach to problem solving at all levels.

• Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a broad spectrum of individuals

• Well organised with the ability to plan workload to achieve deadlines.

• Good numeracy skills and conversant in Word and Excel
